My New Awareness of People with Disabilities
Coping with Disability
When a rare illness suddenly attacked my nervous system, I went from being a healthy sportsman to living in a wheelchair within days. “Losing my independence was extremely difficult,” I said. “It was disempowering, frustrating, and embarrassing. I had to ask for help with the simplest tasks.”
Now, I have the utmost respect for those with physical disabilities. “It opened my eyes to how hard it is for those with limited mobility. I’m fortunate that my time in the wheelchair was temporary. I admire people who have permanently lost the use of their limbs and still lead happy, productive lives.”
Diagnosis and Rehabilitation
After experiencing strange symptoms, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. “I walked into the hospital with a limp, but by the next day, I couldn’t even reach for my phone. It was scary.”
Despite setbacks, I embraced my recovery. “The professionalism at Rehab@Muelmed was incredible. The therapists became my friends, offering encouragement and support. The psychologist helped me through tough times and kept me focused on recovery.”
My journey has given me a profound new awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities.
